Marble 8

Last night we decided to treat ourselves to a bit of a fancy dinner, so off we went to Marble 8.  Everyone I had spoken to - my parents, my friends, my colleagues - waxed lyrical about the food and the ambiance so I had very high expectations.

The first thing to note about Marble 8 is that it is the sister restaurant to Marini's on 57, so expect swanky, polished and ultimately very modern interiors.  However, Marble 8 differs from Marini's in that there is lots of black furniture, glass, and low lighting, meaning that the atmosphere is a lot moodier.  Another difference is that Marble 8 is situated in a house, whereas Marini's is high up in the Twin Towers.  Don't be fooled by the word 'house' though - a bar, wine room, restaurant and prive are all located inside a very large bungalow.  The overall effect is therefore of a mini complex where you can go for a drink and/or food and/or just to hang out.  Pretty cool!

There is also a sort of outdoor terrace (just next to the bar) where you get a spectacular view of the Petronas Twin Towers.

But now - time to talk about the food.  We were first served an amuse bouche of four quail's eggs (one for each person).  They were perfectly cooked - tender but not raw - and we unfortunately gulped them all down before realising that I should have taken a photo… oops, sorry about that!

Moving rapidly on to the starters: first up was the country-style onion soup with a large cheese crouton and sliced chives.  It had a rough texture (well, it was country-style after all!) and was really very tasty.

The other starter we tried was fine De Claire oysters served with a Bloody Mary shooter.  I must admit that I didn't taste the shooter (not being a fan of Bloody Marys) but the oysters were lovely - so fresh and creamy.

In terms of the main courses, one of us had the fettucine carbonara with veal bacon and aged parmesan.  By all accounts, it was pretty yum: the pasta was al dente and the bacon crisp.  It also tasted very fresh - none of that dreadful overly creamy sauce.

The rest of us had to have steak, given that Marble 8 is essentially an Italian steakhouse.  I went for the wet-aged fillet mignon and it was divine.  Thick, juicy and lean: just how I like it!

Fillet Mignon - sorry this photo doesn't show the thickness of the meat!  (Also, I like my steak done medium-well so that's why it looks rather brown.)

The other two diners shared a dry-aged tenderloin and it was also lovely.  Much thinner than the fillet mignon, but no less juicy and tasty.  Success!

Now, just in case you're wondering, the steaks are indeed served on flat black dishes which initially appear too large for the size of the meat.  The amount of extra space allows you to put lots of sides on your plate (and I guarantee you that these sides are a must try)!  We had the crispy onion rings with a horseradish dip, the steak fries with truffle mayonnaise, and the portobello mushrooms baked with garlic and chilli salsa.  Yum!

The onion rings and the fries.  Sorry I didn't get a photo of the mushrooms!

By the time we had finished our main courses we were far too full for dessert, but they were kind enough to serve us some small chocolates to finish the meal.  I had a chocolate truffle and some sort of chocolate/nutty/crispy confection, and they were both lovely.  I will however definitely be going back to Marble 8 to try their desserts - which I hear are to die for - and of course the other savoury dishes on their menu!  I hear they are open for lunch too…
