The Good Life Eatery

Hi guys!  Sorry it's been a while since our last post.  All four of us have been so incredibly busy with work that it's been impossible to find time to blog.  Fortunately it's a long weekend (Friday-Monday for us here in Malaysia!) so I've finally been able to sit down and get a review done of one of my all-time favourite cafes: The Good Life Eatery.

Now, those of you who know me will be well aware that I am not a particularly healthy eater.  I love fried foods (with a particular weakness for fries) and desserts and burgers and all those bad things.  That said, I also realise that a balanced diet is a good idea, so when I find a place that does healthy AND yummy food ALL DAY ERRDAY it's like I've hit the jackpot!  And when I discover that this place delivers as well, I just cannot contain my excitement.

The Good Life Eatery serves an array of dishes to suit individual needs - gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan…you name it, they've got it.  Their menu is written on a large blackboard above the till - I've pretty much tried everything on it but haven't photographed everything (sorry) so this blog post will only feature a sprinkling of what's on offer.  Also note that some of the dishes below may no longer be on offer as I had them a while ago (I left London last year), but I'll still include them as they give you a pretty good idea of the type of stuff available at this wonderful place.

Skinny Benedict: Poached Eggs on Wheat Free Bread with Avocado, Cherry Tomatoes and Hollandaise Sauce

How gorgeous does that look?!  Art on a plate.  Seriously.  And it tastes as good as it looks - special mention must go to the skinny hollandaise because it's so much lighter than the traditional version so not as sickly.  WIN.

Granola Bowl

Oh and the matcha latte with almond milk is pretty good too!

This is probably one of my favourite breakfasts ever.  Homemade gluten-free granola (it includes pecans, almonds, coconut flakes, goji berries, dates and the like) with raspberries and blueberries, topped with honey and either coconut or plain yoghurt.  Always go with the coconut yoghurt.  Always.  It's creamy but not overpowering and contrasts well with the crispness of the granola and the sweetness of the honey and the fruit.

One teeny problem might however be that it gets a bit dry as you go so do ask for a glass of milk on the side.

Quinoa Porridge

The quinoa porridge is in the bowl furthest from you, in case you're wondering!

As you can see, it's got berries, sliced banana and nuts, and, according to Katie who had it, the dish made a filling breakfast that didn't leave her feeling guilty.

Goodness Bowl

With salmon teriyaki

With shredded chicken

Basically these are just bowls of salad, but really hearty, tasty salad.  The vegetables have probably changed by now, but I believe the Goodness Bowl concept remains. And as you can see, you can select more protein to be added.  Really good for lunch or dinner.

Drinks

Superfood smoothies

Some people come to The Good Life Eatery for the smoothies alone, and I can see why - they are so filling that they can exist as a meal in themselves, and they're pretty yummy too, with rather unique flavours.

The Hulk: wheatgrass, spirulina, raw almonds, coconut milk,  pineapple, banana, Madagascar vanilla,  fresh basil

Cocobutter: coconut milk, coconut water, organic peanut butter, dates, Madagascar vanilla, Sun Warrior vegan protein

I'll confess that I can't quite remember what this is called (major fail on my part, sorry) but it does look very green and healthy doesn't it?!

Hot Drinks

Pretty and belly-warming skinny latte

You've already seen the matcha latte above which I can't recommend enough.  Ok, so obviously if you don't like green tea stay far away from it.  But if you're a matcha lover, I'd totally go for it.  Has a lovely nutty flavour with almond milk.

Cold-Pressed Juices
Really sorry that I don't have any photos of these, but if you do go into the cafe you'll see them immediately as they're in a fridge next to the till (with all the yummy small bites like peanut butter cups, brownie bites, chia seed puddings (to die for!) and the like).  As I'm sure most people know by now, cold-pressed juices are much better for you then normal ones as the heat from the blades of a standard juicer tend to kill off much of the nutrients in the fruit.  The Good Life Eatery does a wide range of cold-pressed juices so there should be something for everyone, and you'll definitely feel healthier and more vigorous after you've downed some!

As you can probably tell by now, I'm a big fan of this great little cafe.  However I have to admit that it isn't perfect.  The first issue is that it's pricey.  Most salads are over £10 (excluding additional protein like salmon or chicken) and the smoothies are usually about £6-£7.  This nevertheless shouldn't come as much of a surprise considering the high quality of the ingredients, but it does mean that one can't go to The Good Life too many times a week.

The second issue is that it's a small cafe and is often very crowded, to the extent that I've seen queues forming into the street outside, especially at lunch time.  I guess this is partly because they don't take reservations.  As such, I would suggest that you turn up early or get takeaway/delivery.

Overall, though, it's a great little place that does incredibly wholesome food and drinks, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a big dose of "healthy" in their lives!
