Brunching in Bali - Part 1: Monsieur Spoon

I holidayed in Bali over the weekend.  It was as idyllic as it sounds - I attended a friend's beautiful wedding on Saturday and the rest of the time was spent on the beach, in the spa and of course working our way through the wonderful restaurants & cafes Bali has to offer.

Monsieur Spoon stands out as probably the best brunch we had during our time there.  It's run by two Parisian cousins, and you can tell: the dishes on offer are simple but made with such skill and finesse.

Yes, that was for 2 people - don't judge!

Being typically greedy Malaysians, we decided to go for two dishes each (!) so that we could try a variety of what was on offer.

My friend had the Breakfast Burger which consisted of roast chicken, a poached egg, roasted onion, tomato, lettuce and turmeric lime sauce stuffed into a homemade burger bun, which she pronounced delicious.

Her thoughts on the cheese crepe were also overwhelmingly positive - that the crepe was thin and light, and that the cheese was flavourful but not overpowering.  I too thought my chocolate crepe was one of the best (if not THE) best I had ever eaten: the texture of the crepe was perfect and the chocolate was pleasantly bittersweet and not overly oozy/messy.

Here is a closer look at my savoury main - two poached eggs on top of wholegrain toast accompanied by smoked salmon, spinach and cream cheese.  Again, an excellent dish, though if I was being very picky I'd probably say that the bread was a little airy for my liking.

As you can see, there was also a lot going on at the pastry counter, from pain au chocolat to madeleines.  We didn't get to try everything (our stomachs just couldn't handle any more after those massive mains!) but we simply had to try their croissant - which has an almost legendary reputation.  And it didn't disappoint: flaky on the outside, soft on the inside, with just the right amount of butteriness.  Honestly the definition of foodporn.

Finally, to balance out all the (relative) unhealthiness of the above, we had the banana and mango juices.  They were incredibly fresh and tasty, though without the tooth-aching sweetness of many of the so-called "healthy" juices we find in many other places around the world.

Two happy tummies after a fantastic meal!

To conclude, I can't recommend this place enough.  I've not tasted French food of that quality outside France and I am certainly going back for more helpings the next time I'm in Bali!

Rating: 10/10!
