Battle of the Bao - Round 1 Mr Bao

The best baos are deliciously filled clouds of joy, bad baos are pretty awful. My next few posts will review a number of London's most popular restaurants, serving steamed buns. Mr Bao, in Dalston, is a small Taiwanese restaurant which sells small sharing plates and specialises in steamed buns.

We shared some sesame spinach to start. Fresh baby leaf spinach in a sesame dressing and dusted with sesame seeds. It was light and tasty, but seemed like something I could recreate at home.

On the other hand, the sweet potato fries were great. They were incredibly crispy and covered in a wasabi mayo.

Most importantly, the baos. Firstly I had the Bao Diddley, a bao filled with crispy fried chicken, tangy creamy wasabi mayo and kimchi. The bao itself was incredibly light, fluffy, hot and could support the filling. The fried chicken was tender, not greasy and the batter was well-seasoned (more like a karaage rather than a tempura batter). The kimchi was finely shredded and not too sharp. This bao was very very good.

I also had the prawn bao. Three large king prawns battered, with finely sliced mooli, spring onions. The prawns were drizzled in a chimichurri style sauce. This was pretty average, the sauce was not very strong and didn't cut through the fried prawns. The mooli could have been pickled. The batter was not a light tempura and I think the bao would have been better with grilled prawns. It was tasty but not superb.

The place is intimate, friendly and relaxed. The food is good in parts - with the chicken bao and the sweet potato chips being great. Mr Bao has a brunch menu and features fusion hollandaise style baos, which they serve at the weekend. I would like to go back to try those and will report back.
