A Halloween Special: The Lighthouse

The day after Halloween I took a friend to one of my favourite pubs. The Lighthouse has always had an artistic feel to it but this time the people in charge of the decor had surpassed themselves. Every little detail from the ghostly portraits with moving images on the walls to the pumpkin on the haunted piano screamed for attention and made our afternoon tea feel like a mini Halloween party.

The Lighthouse is not a typical pub- it's cosy, never too noisy and you won't feel out of place having just a soft drink. There's at least a dozen aromatic teas to choose from and my friend and I tried the chai tea and some herbal blends.

I think the Lighthouse falls within the definition of a gastropub as the food is excellent and it's popular for lunch and dinner not just on the weekends. The battered cod with chips is a pub classic but you can tell that a lot more effort has gone into this one. The chips were cooked three times and the fish was very fresh.Top marks for presentation.

If you like reading and relaxing in cafes then you should try The Lighthouse on a weekend. It is spacious enough to accommodate a quiet visitor and it also has a nice garden which is open in the winter. If you're looking for a new book to start I would recommend Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse" for the obvious reason.

Here's the address:
