Flesh and Buns

Before embarking on a small adventure in Theatreland  to witness young Shakespeare's writer's block in "Shakespeare in Love", I went to Flesh and Buns for an early but exciting dinner. And it certainly inspired some good thoughts for this blog.

Being at the heart of Covent Garden makes it an easy choice for pretty much anyone who is seeing a show in the evening so it is essential to book in advance. It can get very busy in the evening and you can only get seats for two at the long shared table so if you want some quiet time it's best to arrive before 7pm.

We started with the prawn tempura roll, the salmon avocado roll and the Korean fried wings. The sushi was excellent and the wings were full of flavour.

Then we tried the famous buns with two different fillings: salmon teriyaki and crispy piglet belly. The buns come separately from the dishes so you can cut the carbs if you like. The portions are generous and there is a set menu before 6pm which is a good value and ideal for work lunch.

For dessert we had black sesame creme brulee which looked very exotic and I liked it because it was less sweet than the classsic creme brulee. The sorbet selection was less good but then the non-alcoholic cocktails are very nice and sweet enough to substitute the dessert.

Those of you familiar with the work of Murakami will appreciate the fusion of Japanese and American culture which manifests itself in Japanese Jazz playing in the background and funky cartoon pics on the walls. I enjoyed it and would definitely go back.
