Mario & Luigi

Having heard so many good things about Mario & Luigi, I finally headed over for dinner last night.  I am pleased to report that it did not disappoint.

To start, we shared a couple of antipasto:

Burrata

The burrata, served with heirloom tomatoes & aged balsamic, was excellent.  The creaminess of the cheese was nicely balanced with the acidity of the tomatoes and the balsamic.  I would also like to give the bread that came with it a special mention - it was warm, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, just how it should be in my opinion!

Tuna tartare

The tuna tartare was nice too, though I wouldn't say spectacular.  The toast was perhaps a bit too flimsy - it kept breaking under the weight of the generous chunks of tuna!

Now, onto the mains:

Tagliatelle with truffle butter sauce

I had this gorgeously rich tagliatelle, covered (read: smothered) in truffle butter sauce and topped with a runny egg yolk.  It was delicious, though if you're on a diet or have cholesterol problems I would recommend staying away!

Just look at that #YolkPorn!!

Spaghetti with sea urchin

One of my friends had the uni spaghetti - and I of course had to steal a bite (or ten).  Now, I don't typically like sea urchin, but in this case it was prepared beautifully, with most of the "fishiness" gone.  Indeed, the uni provided a wonderful creaminess to the dish and was perfectly complemented by the prawn bisque flavour of the pasta.  Full marks!

Capellini with prawns, crabmeat and white wine

If I'm being perfectly honest, this capellini was probably my least favourite main - simply because I'm not sure that the semi-Asian flavour of base (as reflected in the lime) really went well with the pasta.  That being said, my friend really enjoyed it so perhaps it's just a matter of personal taste.

Despite being absolutely stuffed after our mains, we just had to have dessert (there's a separate stomach for pudding, so they say!)  We shared the panna cotta, which was just to die for.

Panna cotta

Paired with a divine strawberry sorbet and some granola (which provided a perfect amount of crunch), the panna cotta itself was creamy, but not too "wet".  Probably the best I have ever tasted!

In terms of the service, our food was served pretty quickly (we received our starters within 10-15 minutes and later were asked whether we were ready for our mains).  The staff were also very friendly and accommodating.

Overall, I really enjoyed my meal and would definitely recommend Mario & Luigi to anyone who is looking for some seriously good Italian food in KL.
