Mei by Fat Spoon

Mei by Fat Spoon, run by the same people behind the very popular Fat Spoon in Damansara Uptown, is essentially a fusion-y Japanese Restaurant in Desa Sri Hartamas.  I've been there for lunch on a couple of occasions and this is what I had:

Hokkaido Scallop & Lychee Carpaccio

I ordered this not because I particularly like scallop carpaccio but it had a "thumbs up" sign on the menu so I decided to give it a go.  I'm afraid the combination didn't really work for me - tasted a bit oddly watery.

Summer Bara Chirashi Bowl

Yellowtail, salmon, Hokkaido scallop & salmon roe

You know when people say a dish constitutes "comfort food" and you immediately assume that its full of fatty, oily stodgy ingredients?  Well, this rice bowl proves that food doesn't have to be unhealthy to be comforting.  It's the perfect balance of carbs, veg and protein, and is just tossed in a light soy-based dressing.  You can also see that everything is perfectly cut up into manageable bite-sized pieces and the portion isn't overly large.  The perfect lunch dish.

Unagi Rice

I've loved this dish since I was a kid, but unfortunately it wasn't done so well here, primarily because the eel seemed incredibly fatty on this occasion.  As you can see in the photo, I added an onsen egg, which was rather decadent of me I suppose!

Passionfruit and Kaffir Lime Pavlova

This was honestly one of the best pavlovas I'd had in a while.  Crisp on the outside yet slightly chewy on the inside, topped with just the right amount of cream (I.e. lots of it!)  And the passionfruit & lime combo worked really well - tart and fragrant - to cut through the sweetness of the meringue.

Fat Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream

The name says it all really.  It was decadent - moist and intensely chocolatey, with icing both in the middle and on top.  Basically, don't eat this if you're on a diet!

Green Juice

Apple, Kyuri cucumber, kiwi, limau kasturi and dill (the juice doesn't actually taste of dill!)

I realise the name is somewhat off-putting, but remember that this place is known for the quality of its juices, and for good reason too!  The consistency of the liquid is thick (making a welcome change from the expected depressing watery-ness of most green juices) and though the juice is full of healthy goodness, it tastes pretty good.  I especially like the addition of kiwi, the seeds of which add a lovely texture to the juice.

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Mei by Fat Spoon.  The fusion character of the food didn't detract from the fact that all the ingredients were of good quality and generally speaking the dishes were well thought out.
