Springtime in Cambridge

This post is going to be a little different to our usual posts. I'm going to take you along with me to Cambridge on a sunny Saturday.

Cambridge makes the perfect day trip if you live in London and you get that feeling where you just need to escape for a little while. Just hop on the tube up to King's Cross, then get on a train - 50 minutes later you'll be in beautiful Cambridge.

Spend the morning wandering around the Colleges, admiring the amazing architecture and doing a bit of people-watching (my favourite activity!). Make sure you amble through the quiet, quant lawns of Magdalene, the expansive quads of Trinity and over the Bridge of Sighs in John's - oh and don't forget to admire the gorgeous stained glass windows of the King's College Chapel.

When your feet can't take any more, stop for a bit of lunch at Galleria, a lovely little authentic Italian restaurant almost opposite Magdalene. If it's a nice day, ask to sit outside on the terrace: you can watched the punters pass as you chew.

I chose linguini with broccoli, sweet peppers, black olives, basil pesto, cream and parmesan sauce. As a vegetarian, I often find that pasta choices are really boring, and this made an interesting change. Although it was simple, it was delicious, and the flavours worked perfectly together. It was rich and satisfying, and it went down a treat.

He chose tagliatelle with chicken breast, mushrooms, tomato ragu, white wine and cream sauce. Again, although simple, he really enjoyed it. It really made the most of the classic flavours involved.

Tummies satisfied, you can walk along the river bank and giggle at the first-time punters desperately trying not to fall in, or head along to Market Square where there is a big market every Saturday. Pick up some fresh flowers, a nutella and banana waffle, or some pick and mix from the old-fashioned sweet stall. Or if you're in the mood to shop, loop over to the shopping centre - it has every shop you could possibly wish for, all in one place.

You can't go too long in Cambridge without being tempted by more sweet treats - and it is your day out, so you're allowed. My personal favourites are the Fudge Kitchen (if you go at the right time, you can see the fudge being made on a table in the shop, and test it too - just to make sure it's not poisonous) and Benet's, which does the most amazing ice cream. This time round I went for salted caramel. Delicious. Sit on the wall outside King's and watch the street performers while you gobble.

When you're tired and satisfied with your day out, amble back up to the station. On your way, stop off at Emmanuel College and take some pictures of the cute ducklings on the pond - there are hundreds at this time of year!

The perfect day out of London. Trust me - you'll feel so much better for it.
